Scotland’s Grimiest Turnip28 Hobby Competition

On 15 June 2025, Kirkcaldy Gaming Society (KGS) held Scotland’s biggest Turnip28 event: Turnip & Tartan. This is a blog to summarise the hobby competition that took place during the event.

I have also recently written a blog to talk about the Turnip & Tartan event itself. If you have not read it, I recommend you go have a look at it: Turnip & Tartan.

For the hobby competition, each participant could submit a single Turnip28 themed miniature, together with a brief description.

All miniatures submitted were displayed so that all participants could examine them and vote to determine a winner for each of the following categories (wonderfully named by Claire):

  • Tatered & Torn: Best for weathering and battle damage, because nothing in Turnip28 should look remotely clean.

  • Root Awakening: Most horrifying mini. What is more terrifying than sentient vegetables?

  • Mash-terpiece: Best conversion/kitbash, whether it’s a stitched-together horror or a knight with a colander helmet.

Duncan prepared the table to arrange the submissions for the hobby competition, using a mix of terrain crafted by me and painted by Claire and the vegetables crocheted by Andi.

Ten miniatures were submitted in total. The variety of styles and techniques used to craft them was absolutely impressive. Every single mini had a very strong personal style and was clearly a work of love. Claire took some great photos of these cursed and brilliant creations.

Our Blessed Turnip, the Holy Rootshrine (made by Steven) won Tatered & Torn (best for weathering). This miniature has so much narrative and character built into it, evoking a very intriguing sacrilegious sense of religion. It has also many interesting details and textures that make it an absolute joy to behold.

Barbara (made by Andi) won Root Awakening (most horrifying mini). What can I say about Barbara? She is pure style and nightmare fuel. The different techniques used to create her display wonderfully Andi’s inventiveness. Barbara is also an important part of the KGS Turnip28 mythology because of her links to Bob the Blob and Bert.

Bob (made by Bethany) won Mash-terpiece (best conversion/kitbash). Bob is everything you ever wanted in one mini: part plant, part dinosaur, all monster. The use of the stegosaurus bits demonstrates that anything can be kitbashed and the world is our bits box. The beautifully decorated base and the striking pose of the creature make it an even more impressive piece on the table.

To conclude, I want to thank once again all the people who made this event so special. This includes KGS, all the volunteers, the Neeps of Scotland, the participants and everyone who contributed to building the pool of freebies and prizes.
