Yellow has always been seen as a nightmare colour to paint but it doesn't have to be. Niall has come up with a quick guide to get a good table top standard yellow that doesn't require a ton of time applying multiple layers of the same base colour.
The real star of this guide is Valljo Dreadnought Yellow intense xpress colour. Putting this on top of the correct basecoat looks good by itself but a few extra steps can bring it up a level. For this guide I am using the new Luke Skywalker for Star Wars Legion.Â
Paints used
Undercoat.
White colour forge sprayÂ
Grey Colours forge sprayÂ
White paint
Colours
Valljo express Dreadnought YellowÂ
Scale Colour Tenere YellowÂ
Scale Colour White SandsÂ
Army painter Soft Tone.
To start with I basecoated the model using a light grey undercoat. On top of this i applied a light zenith of the white sprayed at 45° above the model. This was to keep some of the grey in the recesses and lighting the rest of the model.Â
When the spray was dry I took a White paint to add highlights to a few of the details I wanted to make more noticeable. Such as the ribbing on the arms.
This is the most important step. Apply the Dreadnought Yellow like you would a normal paint. You don't want to completely flood the model. work your way around I started with the from the left side of the jacket. Paying extra attention to under the arms and the bottom of the jacket. Places that could be easy to miss. Also take care with heavily detail areas like the ribbing on the arms. The trick is to apply one solid coat. And let it dry. If you miss a spoilt its easier to fix when the paint is still wet but you want to let the paint settle.
Once the base colour is fully dried use Tenere Yellow to apply highlights to the top of the jacket. The white applied during the early step can be used as a guide for where to place the highlights. You should only need a small amount of highlighting here.
For the final highlight mix White Sands into the Tenere Yellow and add this in small amount the very top of where you want to highlight.
This final step is optional and i normally only carry it out when the model is about finished and I want to add some extra contrast. Use Army Painter Soft Tone and a sharp brush. Paint it directly into the areas you want to appear more shadowed.
